i should start with this - this blog is in NO WAY sanctioned by the Forest Service - don't even think about thinking that it is. i love my job.
i'm in columbus this week - "Georgia?" you ask (because everyone else has), nope, Ohio. is Columbus, Georgia, really the better known columbus? i wouldn't have thought so. Have you noticed that i've started using capital letters on occasion? not sure how that started... guess when you take such an extended hiatus from blogging, things like that slip in. :)
i have been working in DC, not on a National Park in the wild west. in fact, the Forest Service is part of the Dept. of Ag, not the dept of Interior (NPS is an Interior agency), as is commonly thought (and regularly revisited over our 100+ yr history, as recent DC squabbles confirm).
i've spent the past 9 months mostly furthering the use of urban forestry and assisting with the cooperative forestry side of things as well, on occasion. urban forestry, as a tool, is a proven method for combating community violence, improving public health (you name it, trees help), and bringing economically depressed communities up (to a degree... let's just say trees did not cause the mortgage crisis and therefore have less power to assist than other cures, in truly hard hit areas). it does lots of other stuff too. the urban forest (as differentiated from urban forestry, as a practice) has innumerable benefits of its own. a wide variety of websites and blogs are helping spread the word about this ubiquitous and increasingly well-understood panacea. start with the basics: treelink.org, Tree City USA, and of course: FS UCF.
i'm afraid that'll have to be all for now - but i like the comments :) they help me think. more on the move/detail/rotations later, i hope - i hope also to know more about them by the time i blog again :)
cheers all!
