more 'bama.

did i eat this much meat when i lived in south carolina? will i eat this much meat when i return to the south? i highly doubt it. it seems that not an hour goes by that a piece of pork is not thrust under my nose - it's really yummy, there's no doubt of that, but i think i'll eat tofu stir fry for a month when i get back not*home.

yesterday i visited a ply-wood mill, where they laser-optimize their cutting process and then roll the layers off a tree with a lathe the way a cat unrolls toilet paper off the roll... fascinating. then a lumber mill, where they laser-optimize the right size board that should come out of the log sitting on the line... fascinating. then a laminating plant, where they piece together hundreds of 2x6s to make butresses for churches, stanchions for homes, and doorways for some sultan's horse barn in dubai... fascinating. then this morning a paper plant, where they buy all the left overs from the above three processes and soak it in chemicals, grind it with chemicals, bleach it with chemicals, package it with chemicals, and then spew their permitted waste chemicals into the conecuh river... disgusting. paper is a dirty process. i think i took 10 years off my respiratory system today.

all in all, what a lovely time; good company, and i'm learning a lot. even got a little sun today on my arms and legs while we ate lunch out by the lake.

ohp, i hear dinner plans... what's that? of course, steak. :)
